Kinja'd!!!

My friend asked me a question earlier and at first, it was easy to answer, but now that I think of it, it isn’t. So that question is, will you be pulled over for acclerating quickly up to the speed limit?

My friend asks this because he wants a WRX and wants to use it to its full potential.

I’d like to know also. Btw, he sounds like a douche in training no offense.

don’t spin the tires tho. I think it’s called “a display of excessive speed” or something like that. Once tho I got a warning for “exhibition of acceleration” in my M3. Not sure I passed the speed limit that time. It could also lead to a reckless driving charge

Probably not, but there are generic laws against general hooning.

As long as you weren’t doing it recklessly I don’t see why you would get ticketed... That’s just me guessing though...

Yes. Exhibition of speed.

Depends on the cop, but he could easily get nabbed for reckless driving.

Apparently you can be charged in Michigan (there was an post about that here a while ago—Letho maybe?), so I’d assume other places can as well.

In the end it probably depends on the cop.

Also regarding this:

he wants a WRX and wants to use it to its full potential.

He should find a good track, then, and attend track days. “Using it to its full potential” on regular roads is dangerous and does a disservice to all of us Jalops.

Will you or CAN you? Yes on the latter.

http://carbuying.jalopnik.com/you-dont-have-…

And the same applies to unsafe starts and sudden accelerations.

Definitely gonna depend largely on the particular cop. Generally, not spinning the tires puts you on the safe side, but if the driver next to you decides to play, too, all of a sudden you’re getting a big fat ticket for drag racing. In some jurisdictions I believe that’s a felony.

The best advice is for your friend to take it to a drag strip where he can actually test the limits of his car’s acceleration. Failing that, he should at least hoon where no one else is around to see it/potentially get hurt.

Yes, ‘exhibition of speed’ or ‘contest of speed’ (if someone else is doing it with you) are against the law in most jurisdictions. In ones where they’re not, you’re at peril of ‘reckless driving’.

Have to get caught though.

He definitely will. He likes to get involved in the car community.

He’s not a douche in person, but I’m just not sure he needs that much power.

How old is he? If he’s like 16, he will get himself in major trouble along with his insurance skyrocketing.

He’s turning 15 this October but his dad already gave him a suggestion of cars. I know he likes power but I really think that getting something like a Dart base model (he’s a Mopar guy) would be better for all expenses.

I think he’s the type of person to be responsible and go to the drags, but that’s still a good thing for me to remind him on.

“Exhibition of speed” I don’t know if it’s actually a thing, but I have been threatened with it. I’m guessing it would be hard to get it to stick, I was fully prepared to take pictures of the road with no tire marks, but I have no idea how you can actually defend against it, or alternatively how they would get it to stick.

I’m not sure how many cops he sees on a day to day basis so I’ll have to ask him.

Around here at least, cops aren’t too lenient. My friend recently moved though so I have to ask him about how cops are up there.

In that case you better scare them off. Or better, let them learn by experience.

Depends on where it is. On the interstate? You’re fine. In Goldberg’s Gated Garden Retirement Community, or around St. Mary’s “Think of the Kids” Catholic school? There’s probably a cop waiting to give you a reckless driving ticket right there.

It is a thing. Doing a burnout is an obvious way to get one, but not the only way. Tire marks are not absolutely necessary.

No. He will die. Like, actually die. And at that age, he definitely won’t be taking it to the drag strip or track.

Kinja'd!!! JGrabowMSt > MLGCarGuy

Kinja'd!!!1

Depends on the cop. I’ve done it in my SL many times, so far I haven’t been pulled over, but I’ve had cops swing right up my tail and certainly make their presence known.

And my SL is not exactly the kind of car someone my age is normally in, so I’d be ripe for the picking if they were having a bad day.

There’s accelerating to enter traffic, and there’s making a show of it. As long as you don’t blur or cross the line between those, I think you’re safe.

If your friend wants to use the potential of the car, start with autocross for general car control, and move to rally cross. Do not do it on public roads. If you can afford the car and want to unlock the potential, then do it in a place that’s safer for everyone. No reason to be a numbskull mouthbreather over it.

I feel like burnouts and doughnuts are vandalism. What gets me about exhibition of speed is that absent tire marks, it just “too fast for my liking” which is totally subjective and they don’t even attempt to define it. It’s basically the charge “you’ve made a spectacle of yourself” so is being a hipster on a motorized vehicle illegal too? (I hope so)

Kinja'd!!! JGrabowMSt > MLGCarGuy
08/28/2015 at 12:26

Kinja'd!!!1

He needs something small and slow to start. If I had a car at that age, I definitely wouldn’t have a license today. He really needs to appreciate having any car first, and work up to having something with any form of power beyond an econobox. It’s a privilege not a right.

I think the exhibition of speed sans tire marks stems from other drivers not knowing that you are going to be doing something outside of normal.

I did this once when I was 17 in my very well built blazer (lots of engine modification, I built it by hand) and oops 17 year old me didn’t notice the cop behind me.

BLARED to the speed limit, no tire chirp tho. He pulled up next to me at the next light and did the most epic head shake EVER. I simply made a weak smile and waved politely.

He shook his head and drove away. Depends on the cop, the environment, tire squawk, etc.

It comes down to the officers discretion. You could get a violation even if you aren’t hammering it.
